Chelsea player denies allegations of 'faking phone call' to avoid fans

Wesley Fofana has responded to accusations of ‘faking a phone call’ to avoid meeting Chelsea fans, calling the claims ‘absurd’ and stating that he would never intentionally snub supporters.

The defender is looking to finally get his Chelsea career going having barely played for the club since his £70million move from Leicester City in 2022.

He missed all of last season through injury but appears to have the trust of new boss Enzo Maresca after starting their opening two Premier League games: a 2-0 loss to Manchester City and a 6-2 thrashing of Wolves.

However, a few videos circulating on social media following the victory at Molineux last Sunday has courted controversy among fans.

The clips show Chelsea players like Cole Palmer and Malo Gusto greeting supporters outside the stadium, signing autographs and taking photos before getting on the team bus.

But the footage also appears to show Fofana approaching the area before suddenly taking a call, ignoring fans and then hanging up his call just before boarding the bus.

Chelsea fans were none too pleased over the incident, but the France international has since taken to Twitter to dismiss the claims he was ignoring the supporters.

Replying to a tweet which shared the video with the caption: ‘Wesley Fofana faking a call to avoid the fans. Smart guy,’ the 23-year-old said:

‘Hahaha people are crazy. I got a call and then I went to put my bag in the bus. After that I go take pictures with the fans.’

The Chelsea squad are currently in Switzerland ahead of the second-leg of theirConference League play-off against Servette on Thursday night.

The Blues are up 2-0 from the first-leg but Fofana will take no part in the clash having been left out from the squad with Maresca looking to keep him fit and fresh for the Premier League.

He’s likely to start on Sunday therefore when Chelsea host London rivals Crystal Palace.
